Any substance (or group of structurally similar substances, if specified by the Agency) that will prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate any pest, or that functions as a plant regulator, desiccant, defoliant, or nitrogen stabilizer, within the meaning of FIFRA sec. 2(b). 

As defined in 40 CFR 152.3, a statistically derived estimate of the single dermal dose of a substance that would cause 50 percent mortality to the test population under specified conditions.

The potential for a substance to result in adverse effects to an organism soon after exposure. The acute toxicity of a compound is established through scientifically verifiable data from animal studies or human exposure tests.

A request to add another use or new use on the label for an active ingredient with currently EPA-registered products. New uses mean:

1. any proposed use pattern that would require the establishment of, or the exemption from the requirement of, a tolerance or food additive regulation under section 408 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act;
2. any aquatic, terrestrial, outdoor, or forestry use pattern, if no product containing the active ingredient is currently registered for that use pattern; or
3. any additional use pattern that would result in a significant increase in the level of exposure, or a change in the route of exposure, to the active ingredient of man or other organisms.

As per FIFRA pesticide regulations, adjuvants are chemicals added to a pesticide by users to improve the pesticide’s efficacy. Agricultural chemical adjuvants are grouped according to their intended purpose in a tank mix. Such agents are often included in pesticide formulations as “other ingredients,” in which case the ingredient is reviewed during registration, and any necessary tolerances or exemptions from the requirement of a tolerance are established. Examples include acidifying agents, anti-foam agents, buffering agents, suspension agents, gelling agents, emulsifiers, etc. Pesticide Registration Manual Ch. 1 Overview

When mentioned in EPA documents, “the Agency” refers to the EPA. 

Any substance intended to disinfect, sanitize, reduce, or mitigate growth or development of microbiological organisms or protect inanimate objects, industrial processes or systems, surfaces, water, or other chemical substances from contamination, fouling, or deterioration caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, algae, or slime.
